Wander Type Project

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

This book was created for the Found Type Specimen in Games project as part of the AVT 215 course at George Mason University Korea. In this project, my mission was to select a video game and identify both English and Korean alphabet characters within the game. I chose The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which I played on the Nintendo Switch. While exploring the vast game world, I discovered 55 different English and Korean consonants and vowels from various elements such as nature, structures, and characters.

Each of the alphabet specimens I found has unique characteristics. Some of them reflect an old style, while others are more modern. A few are in a sans-serif style, while others have distinctive serif shapes. The design of these characters often reflects the game’s atmosphere, environment, and narrative. The fonts I encountered not only serve as visual elements within the game but also contribute to the overall aesthetic, storytelling, and immersive experience.

This book contains a collection of the characters I found and provides an analysis of their individual traits, exploring how these typefaces are integrated into the game’s world. Through this project, I gained insight into how type can be a crucial part of game design and storytelling.

About the Author: Yuhyun Kim

Yuhyun Kim, the author of this book, is a student at George Mason University, where she is studying computer game design. She was first introduced to the Zelda series with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Nintendo Switch when she was 17, and has been hooked ever since, playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was released in 2023. She is looking forward to more of these narrative, open-world games.
