I never thought my first book would be completed amidst a global pandemic, but the universe had other plans. This book is based on a project that instructed us to travel the only way we could: using Google street view. The premise was underrepresented typography, and immediately I knew I wanted to make it about Puerto Rico because I’ve lived there my whole life. This gave me the opportunity to realize this book by collecting the images in person. At first I wanted to make it about Puerto Rico in general, but eventually decided on limiting it to San Juan since it is a place I am more familiar with.
This book was intended to be a fun project as part of my Typography course, but things changed and got more serious along the way and now I will be self-publishing it. It was a long process involving various trips to San Juan, as well as hunting for typography and signage online to seek it out in person. I am so grateful to be able to represent where I’m from with this book, as well as show the world the timeless beauty found in every day type.
