Hello, and welcome to an exploration of type specimens. This booklet is dedicated to the unique letterforms found within the game, connecting game design to typography. The game I chose is Cookie Run, it is a famous Korean mobile game for smartphones produced by ‘Devsisters’ with the motif of the American fairy tale ‘Gingerbread Man’.
As I played through Cookie Run, I discovered the consonants and vowels embedded in the game’s level design. The letters in the book include Latin and Korean Alphabet, totaling 50 distinct characters that contribute to the game’s aesthetic.
In this booklet, you’ll be able to find a detailed analysis of these letterforms’ anatomical characteristics. I identified defining features such as x-height, ascenders and descenders, sans-serif construction, and proportions that create a sense of unique typography.
Each letter, whether from the alphabet or Hangul, has its distinct personality that reminds one of the history of diverse fonts. Beyond their form, the letters carry a certain visual rhythm that makes them memorable.
Additionally, each letter is connected to cultural contexts (cubism, constructivism…etc) that give them a unique resonance. These backgrounds offer insight into the inspiration behind each letter, which dives into the world of visual art.
About the Author: Jieun Sim
I’m a Computer Game Design major student at George Mason University. Now I’m a sophomore, and it’s my 2nd semester. I took three classes of AVT, which were about ‘Art,’ ‘Visual,’ and ‘Technology.’ Through these classes, I was able to explore the field of art and expand my insight into design, not only limited to games.
From this class, I learned about the basics, history, terminology, grid systems, eliminations & motifs, and word experiments of type specimens.Through this long journey, I was able to finally write this ‘Wander Type,’ which is my type specimen booklet. As a Korean, I also found 24 Korean letters with consonants and vowels.
In the future, I aim to be a 3D game designer who brings imaginative worlds and characters to life. And according to these experiences, I’m excited about the broader world of digital art and media. As a future 3D designer, I’ll work at the intersection of art, storytelling, and technology, using digital art techniques to craft visually stunning, interactive experiences.
